The weddings featured on Love Is Blind are legally binding, according to the show’s creator, Chris Coelen. The couples marry in ceremonies conducted by real officiants, and marriage paperwork is filed, meaning a breakup can require a formal divorce just as it would for other married couples.

Coelen confirmed the marriages in a 2020 interview with Bustle, saying that couples who choose to marry enter a legally binding union. Former contestant Lauren Speed also told Refinery29 that her marriage to Cameron Hamilton was real and that its legal status made the experience feel especially serious.

According to The Tab, the paperwork is completed on the wedding day, often with a judge or an ordained officiant present. Marriage records have also revealed outcomes before they were shown on the series: TMZ reported on records that spoiled several weddings in 2020, and fans have searched for clues online.

Couples who decide to divorce reportedly have to wait until 11 months after the wedding, to avoid spoiling the show for viewers. The Tab reports that production pays up to $5,000 per couple toward filing and mediation costs.
