Bal Harbour Shops has completed a two-level, 200,000-square-foot expansion, adding a new West Shops wing and space for 30 luxury stores and restaurants. The openings will take place in stages, beginning this month and continuing into the coming years. The center is now 600,000 square feet in total.
Khaite, Boucheron, Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton, Celine, Eden Gallery, Moorer, Elie Saab, Messika and Paul & Shark are among the brands opening in the new wing. Other labels, including Saint Laurent, Roger Vivier, Bottega Veneta, David Yurman, Zegna, Pomellato, Santoni, Graff and Loro Piana, are expanding or moving into larger West Shops locations.
Toteme and Peserico have recently opened in the older East Shops section. Lululemon and Simkhai are expected to open in 2027, with further brands due in 2028. The expansion is also bringing additional restaurants to the center, which expects to at least double its restaurant count to between eight and 12.
The project was backed by a $740 million loan secured by Whitman Family Development, the center’s owner. Its development took decades and faced community opposition, approval hurdles, construction challenges and delays related to the pandemic. Work also involved relocating a Congregational church on the property and building a new parking garage on the former church site.
Matthew Whitman Lazenby, president and chief executive of Whitman Family Development, said the West Shops was designed to blend with the existing center’s tropical landscaping and architecture. The new wing features koi ponds and waterfalls, alongside white buildings with black railings and awnings.
Bal Harbour Shops, at 9700 Collins Avenue in Miami, opened in 1965. The expansion is its largest to date, according to Lazenby, who described the project as a continuation of the center’s focus on luxury retail and the customer experience.
