Netflix has announced the development of a live-action series based on Krafton's 2017 battle royale hit, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. The project places Donald Glover at the helm in multiple capacities; he is set to star in the series while also writing, executive producing, and planning to direct.

The creative core of the show reunites a familiar partnership between Donald and his brother Stephen Glover. Stephen will co-write and executive produce, marking another collaboration for the duo who previously defined FX's Atlanta. Their recent joint efforts include Amazon's Swarm, the musical film Guava Island, and Stephen's writing work on Donald's Mr. and Mrs. Smith series.

The producing team combines expertise from film, management, and gaming sectors. Michael Schaefer is executive producing for Neon TV, while Fam Udeorji joins for Gilga. Representing Krafton's entertainment division, LV3H, are Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee, ensuring the game's studio has a direct hand in the screen adaptation.

A significant challenge for the writers is that PUBG lacks an inherent storyline to adapt. The game operates on a premise where players drop onto maps with weapons and gear until one remains standing, without built-in characters or lore. Consequently, the creative team is working from a premise rather than a plot, with specific story details currently under wraps.

Despite the narrative hurdles, the source material remains highly relevant. Nearly a decade after its release, PUBG continues to be one of the most-played games globally, drawing hundreds of thousands of daily active players following multiple Guinness World Records set at launch.

This project expands Netflix's growing slate of video game adaptations. The streamer is currently developing an Assassin's Creed series and a live-action Gears of War film, alongside animated versions of Clash of Clans and Minecraft. Its existing library already includes Splinter Cell: Deathwatch and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
