GQ has published a 2026 guide to 16 automatic watches for men, with recommendations grouped by price, from under $250 to high-end models for buyers without a set budget. The article highlights Orient and Seiko among the brands offering well-made lower-priced options, and points to Timex, Casio, Bulova and Sternglas in the under-$500 category. For budgets below $1,000, it suggests considering smaller or independent brands for less familiar designs.
Automatic watches use a mechanical movement powered by the wearer’s motion. A weighted rotor turns as the wrist moves, winding a spring that drives the hands and other functions. Many models also have a power reserve, which lets them keep running for a period when they are not being worn. GQ says this reserve commonly lasts 40 to 80 hours, though some watches can run for a week or longer.
Unlike quartz watches, automatics do not rely on a battery, but they need maintenance and can be costly to repair. GQ advises following the manufacturer’s service schedule, noting that an overhaul and lubrication may be needed every four to 10 years, depending on the model. It also recommends treating a mechanical watch with care, since its movement contains numerous precisely calibrated parts.
The guide says its picks were assessed around quality, fit and price, drawing on input from GQ staff and experience with brands. It notes that the team had firsthand experience with most, but not all, of the watches selected.
