Janelle Monáe brought her distinctive approach to fashion and performance art to Halloween, unveiling three original creature costumes created for the festivities. Among them was Mother Creature, a haunting transformation revealed after several hours in the makeup chair.
The singer and actor also used the occasion to promote Wondaween, her second annual Halloween arts festival. She first appeared as Piper the Party Starter, a pink-haired, green-skinned character featuring exposed bones and a protruding eyeball.
Monáe later debuted her Phish Boy concept on The Jennifer Hudson Show and at the Creature Carnival-themed event held on the Santa Monica Pier. She then completed the trio with Mother Creature, an original character whose design had reportedly taken years to develop and conceptualize.
To create the looks, Monáe worked with special effects artists and costumers Sasha Glasser, Malina Stearns, Chelsea Delfino and Alex Navarro. The resulting costumes showcased extensive makeup, prosthetics and costume design, turning her Halloween appearances into elaborate creature performances.
