Madewell has opened a new store in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood, marking its second location in the borough and its ninth across the New York City area. The 4,500-square-foot shop is on the ground floor of a historic building at 51 Bergen Street.
The building was originally constructed as a horse-drawn carriage factory in the 1800s and later housed a belt factory. Its restoration retains architectural features including timber post-and-beam columns and a tongue-and-groove wood ceiling, while an open, loft-style layout combines the building’s historic character with the brand’s retail design.
The store carries Madewell’s latest menswear and womenswear. Its dedicated men’s shop features custom fixtures and furnishings inspired by traditional woodworking and the brand’s workwear heritage.
Garrett Putney, Madewell’s senior vice president of stores, told WWD that the company wanted the Cobble Hill location to reflect the latest expression of the brand across both men’s and women’s collections. He said the historic setting captures qualities the company appreciates about New York and will offer a place for residents and visitors to experience the brand.
For its opening celebration, with activities scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Madewell is offering an exclusive Cobble Hill denim tote, New York-inspired patches customized by Eva Joan, and live illustrated portraits by artist Georgia Carey.
The store joins a retail stretch in the neighborhood that includes Warby Parker, Aesop, Eileen Fisher, Clare V. and Talea Beer.
