Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old Democrat from Colorado, has won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress. She is the second member of Gen Z to reach the House, after Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost, who was elected in 2022.
Kiros drew national attention after losing her job at a major New York law firm in 2023. She had declined to condemn an open letter urging law school deans to address antisemitism on campus. Kiros said she condemned antisemitism but cautioned against conflating bigotry with debate over Israel’s legitimacy. She described the right to question a government and its actions as fundamental to democracy.
Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Kiros moved to Denver with her family as a baby. She studied political science and economics at Washington College, graduating in 2018, and earned a law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2022. She is now pursuing a doctorate in public policy and also works as a barista.
After returning to Colorado, she joined John Padora’s 2024 congressional campaign as communications director. Two years later, she ran for Congress herself, presenting her candidacy as a call for generational change. Her platform includes universal health care and child care, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending U.S. military aid to Israel, and tackling affordability, climate change and corporate influence.
Kiros also refused donations from corporate political action committees and pro-Israel groups. During the Democratic primary, she criticized opponent Diana DeGette for accepting contributions from defense, energy and pharmaceutical companies. DeGette had questioned Kiros’s experience, saying voters should not send someone inexperienced to Washington.
Research cited in the source found that more than 100 Gen Z candidates ran for Congress in the 2026 midterms, but only 24 appeared on November ballots. Kiros said younger voters want leaders willing to pursue ambitious policies, arguing that socialism means ensuring basic needs are met for everyone.
