My Chemical Romance has officially entered Lauren Tsai's surreal artistic universe with the release of a new animated short film titled Prelude to The End. Produced by Tsai's independent studio UNREAL INC., the project integrates the mythology surrounding the band's iconic album The Black Parade into the visual artist's existing narrative world known as The Dying World.
The hand-drawn film centers on a character named Astrid, who navigates an uncanny New England boarding school that is slowly being buried beneath mountains of discarded objects and trash. After school authorities confiscate and discard her cherished sketchbook, Astrid follows it down a garbage chute, tumbling into a strange subterranean realm populated by abandoned ideas. Among these lost concepts is one of her own creations that continues to haunt her.
The visual journey oscillates between the oppressive corridors of the school and increasingly dreamlike imagery. Through Astrid's confrontation with creativity, conformity, and forgotten parts of herself, the film echoes themes of identity and self-expression that have long defined My Chemical Romance's work. Tsai provides the voice for the protagonist Astrid, while Billie Eilish voices her friend and Phoebe Bridgers plays her sister. Additionally, Hideo Kojima lends his voice to The Teacher, and John C. McGinley portrays the imposing Dean.
This collaboration coincides with the 20th-anniversary edition of The Black Parade, incorporating the album's opening track, "The End," into Tsai's narrative framework. The Dying World originally debuted as a short film at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival before expanding into a large-scale installation at Hollywood Forever Cemetery later that year. For Tsai, who has cited the band as a formative influence and created animated fan videos for their music during her childhood, this crossover represents a particularly personal milestone.
