Laia Garcia-Furtado has chosen four Prada collections from the 1990s as her favorites: Spring 1994, Spring 1996, Spring 1998 and Spring 1992. Her selections accompany the publication of Prada in the Nineties, a book examining the decade’s collections and the evolution of Miuccia Prada’s vision for the brand.
Garcia-Furtado, a former senior fashion news editor at Vogue, said researching the book broadened her perspective beyond the celebrated collections from the latter half of the decade. She describes the 1990s as a period when Prada developed from a fledgling label into the global brand it is today, and says the collections from that era continue to be referenced.
She calls Spring 1996 her favorite fashion collection, crediting its mismatched prints, shades of green and distinctive proportions with influencing her personal style. Spring 1994 stands out to her for its mix of sheer nightgowns, knitwear, leather vests and white dresses, which she says feels both rooted in the era’s grunge spirit and still modern.
Garcia-Furtado’s other picks look to different moods. She describes Spring 1998 as romantic yet futuristic, noting its berry colors, latex details and pink lucite heels. Spring 1992 was initially a blind spot for her, but she grew to appreciate its unusual designs, including a look featuring bike shorts, a twinset and a pillbox hat.
The book also discusses Prada’s Spring 1999 collection, whose mirror embellishments Garcia-Furtado interprets as a humorous response to the hippie trend. Prada in the Nineties is unauthorized and unapproved by the brand, and is scheduled to be available on November 10, 2026.
