DIA Art Foundation and Chanel joined forces for the nonprofit’s annual Fall Night on Monday, bringing around 400 guests to an evening celebrating British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen and New York-born writer and artist Roni Horn. The event was Chanel and Dia’s second collaboration.
Guests first visited Dia Chelsea to see an exhibition of work by Argentine artist David Lamelas, then gathered at the nearby Storied NYC event space for cocktails and a candlelit dinner. Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy co-chaired the evening with artists Carrie Mae Weems and Rosemarie Trockel. Sofia Coppola and Marion Cotillard were among those in attendance.
Artist Matthew Barney paid tribute to his longtime friend Horn, describing her as a poet, comedian, analyst and close friend. Musician and poet Meshell Ndegeocello honored McQueen with a surprise spoken-word and roving performance among the dinner tables.
The gala also marked Jessica Morgan’s final Fall Night as Dia’s director after 12 years in the role. She is leaving to become director of Tate in London. Morgan said she was proud of the foundation’s work with its collection, which she said had tripled during her tenure.
Board chair Nathalie de Gunzburg thanked Morgan for her leadership. Morgan also announced that Dia is nearing its $200 million endowment goal.
