Vermont’s towns, mountain scenery and changing seasons provide the backdrop for nine hotels and inns highlighted as options for a New England trip. The selection spans Stowe, Burlington, Woodstock, Bennington and other parts of the state, with a focus on rustic character and distinctive design.

In Old Bennington, The Seminary is a five-bedroom micro-hotel in a restored building dating to 1829. It is currently available to rent as a whole, offering a private stay with a chef’s kitchen, fireplace and communal living areas. Its rooms combine vintage furnishings and original artwork with contemporary touches.

Stowe has several options for travelers seeking time outdoors. Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge has 53 rooms and sits beside Cady Hill Forest, with hiking and biking trails nearby. Its amenities include a sauna, hot tub and two pools. AWOL Stowe, a 35-room boutique hotel, draws on organic forms and muted colors; it also offers a cedar hot tub, sauna, plunge pool and daily breakfast. Tälta Lodge provides another Stowe stay, with 51 rooms and suites, an indoor pool, sauna and bar serving local beer.

For a city visit, Blind Tiger Burlington occupies a mansion built in 1881. The 14-room hotel is known for eclectic decor, a central solarium and a stocked pantry. Its rooms do not have televisions, and breakfast is included.

The historic Woodstock Inn & Resort dates to 1793 and has 142 rooms. Its facilities include two pools, a spa, gardens and several restaurants. Richardson’s Tavern serves dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. In Bennington, Four Chimneys Inn offers a traditional bed-and-breakfast experience, with some rooms featuring working fireplaces or mountain views, plus a daily country breakfast and an on-site restaurant.

Two other properties offer a more expansive countryside stay. The hotel on 112 acres in West Dover has a trout pond, apple orchards and activities including pastry classes and archery; lodging ranges from historic inn rooms to a carriage house. Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford has individually designed suites, breakfast, afternoon tea and a fire pit, as well as an adults-only setting and help arranging activities such as ATV tours and canoeing.
