CNN chief national correspondent John King prepares for election coverage with a demanding routine built around exercise, hydration and planning ahead. During campaign travel, he often spends weeks on the road, juggling interviews and tight schedules. In the days before the midterms, he described visiting five states in five days, with early flights and long drives leaving little control over when or where to eat or sleep.

King, 63, said exercise helps him manage fatigue associated with multiple sclerosis. He tries to work out in the morning, sometimes even after very little sleep. When time allows, a session can last about 90 minutes and include a stationary bike, a treadmill and light weights. He also uses time on the bike to read messages and news or handle work.

Food choices depend on what is available. King looks for yogurt, granola, berries, salads and fresh fish, and keeps almonds or water on hand during long drives. He sometimes ends up with less healthy options, he said, and then tries to balance them with later meals. He also makes room for local favorites, including barbecue in Kansas City.

On election night, King may spend up to 16 hours standing in the studio. Since eating on camera is difficult, he keeps small protein bars behind CNN’s Magic Wall for a quick energy boost and drinks water and coffee. He said he has also learned to take 20-minute naps when travel and work leave an opportunity.

King was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008. He said the condition can affect his legs, hands and concentration, so he pays close attention to how he is feeling and considers preparation important. During the 2020 election, he recalled working long stretches on his feet over several days as results were counted. He expects the work to take a physical toll, but said exercise and preparation help him meet the demands of election coverage.
